Money Or Not It’s A Rich House…Wood or Vinyl Siding in York, Penna.
Victorian House, 956 Linden Avenue, York, Pennsylvania
DARE WE SAY IT…
…Peeling Paint Looks Better Than Dirty Plastic…
We prefer the spooky, withered wood Victorian-era dwelling at No. 956 Linden Avenue any-day as opposed to its neighboring and formerly twin-ish residence at No. 936 Linden Avenue.
It is our understanding that the employment of aluminum or vynil siding takes away from the maintanence of a house. But what kind of a positive influence can an ugly house be on an already down trodden neighbor hood? Does ugly house help an ugly area? And this is to say nothing of the local residents who have no clue how something as silly as the resignation to vynil siding can be coupled with so many other problems that are rooted in apathy.
When compared the two dwellings, the wood versus the vynil, there is quite a difference. At No. 936 Linden Avenue all of the details that once made the house beautiful have been obscured or removed to make way for “new” and easier… There is but a bit of gable trim and a slate roof to compel any notion of its former Victorian glory. This was a prosperous house. How does it look now? Everyone in this neighborhood has some power to make their home more attractive, and will, by default, improve their neighborhood and property values. But this is not regarded what-so-ever at No. 936. Not only is the palce a poster child for how well vynil siding ages, but more to the point, every enjoyable exterior feature, even the porch, has been promptly removed.
Yet these things did not occur at No. 956. Perhaps this is due to appreciation or simply its just a lack of funds and/or motivation. Regardless, the product is much to our enjoyment. We’d rather this decayed wood house any day than to see a plastic wrapper around the place. Yet the locals have no clue as to what they have at their disposal, an enviable architectural plethora that could be augmented to a point that certain streets could become mouth watering to the upper middle class. This would, in turn, improve conditions for everyone. Yet nothing of this is even remotely understood.
Why is No. 956 so wonderful? Well, let’s see…this stick and Queen Anne Revival house may need some work, but it has almost 100 percent integrity. Yes, there are a few window changes and even a louse at the porch, but overall it retains what appears to be original wood siding, barge board gables, the slate roof, massive brick chimneys, and even most of certain original decoative ridgepoles…
They may or may not have money at No. 956, but they certainly live…in a rich house…

I would love to use your photos of the Victorian houses in a graphic novel I’m putting together. No guarantee it will ever get published, but by any chance do you have the rights and would release them? My link will take you to how I would use it, again, it’s just a start of a book and I can use another house if need be, but I really love the look of these on your page (I painted Victorians in San Francisco for over 15 years back in the 70′s – 80′s)
Thanks
Sooo since your house is “rich” can I borrow some money?
I grew up a stones throw from this house. It was n my way to church and girl scouts every week. It was spooky when I was a child, and beautiful now that I am an adult. Im proud to say that the owners are my friends. I dream of a kitchen as nice as theirs. I would take a house with pealing paint and lots of maintenance anyday, over cold, like everyone else, easy vinyl. Wheres the character, and the charm?
For most recent news you have to visit world wide web and on web I found
this web site as a best website for most up-to-date updates.
I’m amazed, I have to admit. Rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and engaging,
and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which too few people are speaking intelligently about. Now i’m very happy that I found this during my hunt for something concerning this.
Thank you LaShonda. That is encouraging to hear.
Wow, this article is pleasant, my younger sister is analyzing these kinds of things,
therefore I am going to let know her.
It’s in the process of being painted now.
NOOOOO….Of course, we love the house and are glad that it maintains such an original appearance.
